Your Questions About Hispanic Scholarship Fund

Sharon asks…

Bill Gates is racist?

Bill Gates: White kids not eligible for my scholarships.

Bill Gates has made his scholarship fund off limits to white teenagers. The Gates Millennium Scholarship fund is financed by a $1 Billion endowment Bill Gates made in 1999. The fund explicitly denies eligibility to white students.

“Students are eligible to be considered for a GMS scholarship if they: Are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian and Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic American;”

Goreto answers:

If you knew ANYTHING about scholarships, you’d know there’s different kinds, Some are ethnicity ones, which is what Gates is obviously doing. White people have plenty of other choices out there, it’s not “racist”.

Goreto answers:

He can give his money to whomever he wants.

That’s the power of capitalism and directing one’s charity where one wants to rather than the people’s largess being funneled through political correctness political agendas both on the left and right.

Carol asks…

Cornell Admissions?

1240 SAT score. 680 writing score. National Honor Society Member. Hispanic=(Affirmative Action. How big of a deal is this?) From the South. Captain of Soccer team senior year, captain of golf team junior and senior year. Key club officer junior and senior year. Co-Founder of a local scholarship fund benefitting people demonstrating financial need. 4 AP classes. 7 Honors. 3 years of french. 4 years of spanish. 1 year of Japanese.
Specifically applying to the Hotel School. Have work experience in the hotel industry and have attended a summer program receiving college credit from the Cornell hotel school as well.

Goreto answers:

Very impressive. You are a well rounded candidate, so I would make certain to meet with a member of the admissions team in your local area.It is good you are asking about admission now . Great time to get a hold of the application essay…and write, polish and perfect the essay.

Using that special check box (Affirmative Action) can work both ways. I would speak with someone who goes to Cornell to see if your ethnicity is a diversity goal of theirs.

This is going to generate a controversial response. But some times, your guidance couselor will tell you not to check the box. Why. Example My friend Rhea, had a damn near 4.00 GPA from a really good Manhattan prep school, she sang solo in an international recognized choir, AP almost everything and haad great service recognition. Her dream school was Yale.

She was wait listed.

Why?

For Yale, the African American pool can be fierce. You may be competing with legacy candidates who are also black, blacks with full scholarhships from less afluent parts of the country. A number of criteria that is also goes into deciding admissions.

My best advice is to call the school, and ask to attend events in your neighborhood hosted by alumnae. Ask them for help in being your advocate and providing you with intelligences.

Those admissions formulas urban v rural, ethinic balances, economic diversity, challenges, experiences and world views is better navigated if you have a guide.
