Sarah Palin, the former Miss Wasilla, has just been announced as John McCain’s running mate. The 44-year-old governor of Alaska was elected in 2006, but before that, she served as the Mayor of Wasilla, a small Alaskan town near Anchorage with a population just under 6000. In order to win a college scholarship, Sarah Palin took part in many beauty contests, winning the crown of Miss Wasilla in 1984 before finishing second in the Miss Alaska contest. Afterwards, Miss Wasilla went on to study journalism in college and even worked on a fishing boat, but she eventually settled on a life in politics. Her first appointment was to the Wasilla City Council, but she worked her way up to Governor of Alaska after defeating the incumbent Republican governor.

i took this photo o f sarah in 1922.
i also took the orginal black and white photo in 1984… 4 years before i was born.
I refer to the photo as “famous” because the image is archived at the Anchorage Daily News. The photo editor replied to an email I sent requesting how to contact Ms. Palin directly. He stated that this particular image is “now famous”. If you search images on any premier search engines, you will get thousands of results. And incidentally, I do not like Sarah Palin at all. @ZebulonGreenDoggy I strongly dislike Sarah Palin for a variety of reasons; however, nice work with the portrait. Why, though, do you refer to the photo as “infamous” instead of “famous” or “well known”?
I can verify my claim as the photographer, because the image posted in almost every website, nation publications and blog sites was copied from a print that I produced. You will see that I burned in around the top of the photo to create a shading effect, thereby reducing a hard contrast look from the pure white background. Furthermore, I labeled every print with my name, date, and copyright symbol in ink on the back.
One day a young woman came to my electrical shop asking if I was the photographer she had heard about. She presented herself as Sarah Heath (later to be married as Sarah Palin) who had recently been crowned as Miss Wasilla. She needed black and white head portaits to submit to enter the Miss Alaska Pageant. I agreed to help her and we took a full roll of 36 frames.
I am the unknown photographer who took the infamous black and white studio portrait of Sarah Palin in 1984. I was a student at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks majoring in theater. My primary study focused on lighting design for stage. My minor was journalism broadcasting, and during the fall semester I was taking photo journalism. I was employed as the master electrician for the theater. I had full access to stage lighting equipment, which I used to setup a photo studio backstage.

Cool… I never thought this photograph I took of Sarah in 1984 would get this much attention. I found the black and white studio portrait of her by chance doing a google image search. I had forgotten about the photograph, and did not recognize it when I first viewed it on the internet. But then I remembered young little Sarah Heath who was desperate to give b & w head shot to the Miss Alaska Pageant organizers before the deadline. I knew there was some kind of connection between us.

Palin will be the trump card that hand it to McCain on a silver platter. Palin is GOD’s CHOSEN ONE because GOD HERSELF see to it that a woman will become VP and later President long before an African American becomes president. Palin will fulfill GOD’s word and will because GOD herself said so.
McCain will unfortunately croak and Palin will inevitably be THE 1st woman president. Even Hillary will not be able to win against Palin in 2012. GOD will see to it that it happens.
