Scholarships are vital for many people. Without scholarships, a significant number of people would not be able to afford the costs of a university education. Because scholarships play such an important role in paying for college education, many organizations offer them. As a single parent, you should avail yourself of scholarship aid if you find it financially difficult to pay for college.
However, the truth is that most scholarships out there are complete scams. Any site that promises you easy access to scholarship funding or “guaranteed scholarships” will never deliver on their promise. What usually happens is that you have to “buy” the application or pay a “submission” fee to the company who will then process your guaranteed money. That money will never show up.
There are some legitimate scholarships out there that you can get, but you need to know where to find them.
So where to look for these real single parent scholarships? Well you can try searching online for a start — but be wary.
The best places to search are government websites, college websites, and various non-profit and business websites. The government website will sometimes list new scholarships. You can also apply for student loan financial federal aid and get access to some free grant scholarships as well. College websites will also list various scholarship programs you can apply to.
How to Actually Get a Scholarship
There is a bit of an art to getting a scholarship. You can simply apply with minimal effort on your part, but your chances of receiving money will be much lower than if you put some work into the process. And at the end of the day, the key to getting a scholarship is to really put the work in. The more work you do for scholarships, the more money you get. This means that you should do plenty of research about the specific scholarship you are applying for. You want to try to “customize” your application to meet the scholarship criteria. Scholarships often require you to write an essay or personal letter explaining why you should receive the scholarship. Put some effort into this process!
It’s vital that you only apply for scholarships that you actually qualify for to. If you don’t qualify (your grades are too low, etc), you won’t get any money. So don’t waste your time just shotgunning applications out. Focus on finding scholarships that fit your criteria and put some real effort into the application process for each one. Doing so will mean more money for you.
