2.) When a boy turns 18, He HAS to register for the draft.
But females don’t.
I don’t care if there will be or will not be a draft, that isn’t the point.
3.) There is a strong push for the latest female veterans (Iraq) to get more support/ aid.
And yet most male vets have yet to see any support.
4.) I wanted to get another degree not too long ago.
90% of all grants and scholarships you had to be a person of color or female.
5.) NOW fought for the “International women’s day”
They also fought against the notion of “International man’s day”
Again one of my wonderful contacts pointed me to Ifeminists.
I told her that I still look at them with caution, and she understands,
Nice lady, her man is very lucky.
That just proves my point,
2.) When a boy turns 18, He HAS to register for the draft.
But females don’t.
I think either no one should register or everyone should.
3.) There is a strong push for the latest female veterans (Iraq) to get more support/ aid.
And yet most male vets have yet to see any support.
I dont really know anything about that, but in my limited experience with Veteran’s Affairs they dont want to help anyone…you have to wade through a sea of red tape to get anything done.
4.) I wanted to get another degree not too long ago.
90% of all grants and scholarships you had to be a person of color or female.
The Pell Grant is for men and women plus there are tons of grant for veterans.
5.) NOW fought for the “International women’s day”
They also fought against the notion of “International man’s day”
NOW is a sexist group…what do you expect?
I think it’s sexist.
This is sexism/double-standards. I wouldn’t pose this question to women who are against such sexism in the first place. Feminists on the other hand…
Hi there Mike. I am not a feminist and I understand where you are comming from, but I also think there are some aspects you must look at. I wont focus my answer on your exact questions, but will instead try to address the issue you are bringing up here.
I understand that you react to the “injustice” in some aspects of societies today that favour women and other vulnerable groups such as minorities. But you need to look at this in a historical perspective. Women has i most societies until recently had a weaker role than men, it is in the last century that women rights have started to really be an issue, and many places women still are looked upon as second to the man.
The femenists fought for equality, wanting to be treated the same as the men, and now in most western countries they have accomplished this, at least on paper. But in many fields(especially “male professions”), such as science and leader jobs women are still in minority! To “give women a chance” and to equalise this difference women are in some cases favoured, to get more women in this field.
Im not saying this is right, of course we want equality, and that is not equality, but protecting the ones that are in danger of being overlooked.
Like I said at the beginning, Im referring more to the general issue you are bringing up rather than your exact questions, but I will also write a few words about them.
1 +2+ 3= The military is very male oriented, protecting the female soldiers is important because like it or not they are weaker and more vulnerable than the men, Im talking both physically as well as emotionally, especially because of the male environment. (consider for example sexual harrasment).
Im not saying its not a difficult situations for the men as well, but women are weaker in this situation.
4= Like I mentioned before this favouring of women will most likely be because they are trying to get more women into this field.
5= The point of a womens day is historically a celebration of women, because they are vulnerable. Womens rights are important, and its not that long ago that we didnt have that. You have to understand how women have been treated historically and in some societies are treated today to understand the need for such a day. Men are not in the same position today as women were, nor have they ever been, so there isnt a pressing need for a “International man’s day”.
2) We have a volunteer army- and bitch to the policy makers and military for excluding women for so long because they thought women were incapable of being productive members of the army. In any case, I don’t agree with it, but women aren’t to blame.
3) all vets should have access to the same support
4) scholarships are from private organizations, they can give to whomever they want.
5) several countries celebrate international men’s day, including the US, Canada, India, Australia, the UK, Jamaica, South Africa, Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago… I couldn’t find any information to support your assertion that NOW tried to block it.
Alright, “Mike”.
Where’s number one? Forget how to count?
2. Hundreds of thousands of men don’t register for the draft, actually. That’s why you never hear of them being jailed- there are too many to effectively enforced this fascist law. So, compliance is voluntary.
3. I don’t know what “support” you’re referring to.
4. Cute anecdote. No citations.
5. My husband works for NOW. They fought against it for the same reason there shouldn’t be a white history month- why on earth would the dominant paradigm need a special day, when they enjoy one EVERY day?
International Women’s Day was created strictly to promote socialist politics, and was always referred to by the Communist name ‘International Working Women’s Day’. It wasnt until the 1970s that the word ‘working’ was dropped along with it’s socialist meaning. Beginning in the 1970′s IWD became coopted by feminists and used now not to promote women’s oppression by a class of borgious upper class men-and-women, but now exclusively by men as as a class of “male chauvenists”. One can say that in the 1970s IWD became a brand new IWD with males -all males- for the first time being “the” enemy. But IWD limped along as a fairly small event until 1980s when “Patriarchy Theory” was elaborated as the new theory for needing an IWD. Then women joined it in vast numbers and the event continues to grow as a gender war, the principle being that men as a priviledged class hurt women as the oppressed class.
International Men’s Day has a completely different reason for coming into being. Although IMD objectives occasionally intersect with those of IWD, such as advocatingh equality betwen the sexes, it is predominately about celebrating positive male role models, a very worthy aim in a social context with highlights ONLY males behaving badly (perhaps a self-fulfilling propoganda exercise by the patriarch theorists who are now in various positions of influence in media. social services, etc).
Here FYI are the Objectives of IMD:
1. To promote positive male role models; not just movie stars and sports men but everyday, working class men who are living decent, honest lives.
2. To celebrate men’s positive contributions to society, community, family, marriage, child care, and to the environment
3. To focus on men’s health and wellbeing; social, emotional, physical and spiritual.
4. To highlight discrimination against men; in areas of social services, social attitudes and expectations, and law
5. To improve gender relations and promote gender equality.
6. To create a safer, better world; where people can be safe and grow to reach their full potential.
Just for the sake of accuracy.
To summarise what I wrote above (which i rushed and is full of spelling mistakes), International Women’s Day started as a day for women to promote socialist objectives, especially for proletarian women to fight against oppression by the upper bourgeous class of men and women. In the 1970′s it became a new movement claiming that men alone oppressed women, and that IWD will be used as a vehicle to promote, primarily, an assumed gender war.
International Men’s Day is not based on the assumption of a gender war. IMD is primarily about promoting and celebrating positive male role models in a contemporary world context which is obsessed with teaching all young boys and girls that males behave badly, and only badly.
PS. N.O.W. has never fought against the establishment of an International Men’s Day. That suggestion is utter b’shit. If you believe I am mistaken then please back it with evidence.
